The Dutch Am Tuat works since 1997 at the development of a distinctive style. In the past this resulted in the album ‘Illusions Of Time' and a demo (2006). Although these discs were important for the musical evolution of these four Dutch guys, the new album ‘Inmotion' shows a completely new approach. This direction can be described as an innovative blend of all kinds of (metal) styles. Death/black/doom metal prevails, but they do not scruple to broaden their musical horizon to progressive, and in this case mainly atmospheric parts. This is due to their admiration for the institute Pink Floyd.

‘Inmotion' is a self-financed release and with its sixty-six minutes it offers a proper insight in the band's intentions. It is conspicuous that the heaviest tracks can be found at the beginning of the album. From the sixth song (‘Ahead Of Sadness') on, melancholy and atmosphere is put first. However, you have to ignore the rather mediocre production - especially an eyesore during heavier tracks - but actually this album would be a real stunner if clean vocals and production were better.

‘Oath Of The Sacrificed' kicks off heavily with sturdy Amon Amarth alike riffs and very, very deep grunts, soon followed by higher blackish screams and melodic guitar leads. From ‘Desidero Fides' on, we regularly hear melancholic clean vocals. They are mixed way too far in the back in a song as ‘Distant Shores', but they sure add a zest to the variegation. Vocally the band has similarities with Belgian Thurisaz, in their ways to build up compositions as well, but Am Tuat does not use keyboards. Spatial effects on guitars in ‘Lost' (with its infectious beats it would be a perfect match for a single) and ‘Fading Images' herald a tendency that comes to full bloom in the next songs. The mysterious ‘Ahead Of Sadness' is a magnificent quiescent song with an acoustic classical guitar solo. But this is only a taster for the true magnum opus of the record; the eighteen minutes long ‘A Cry; The Sound Of A Tragedy'. It opens all registers and does not bore a second! All elements used by Am Tuat pass by, heavy as well as fragile and dark and this mammoth composition does not yield to the better progressive works. The last two songs are a bit faster and straight forward again, but they include any smooth Pink Floyd influences too if you go deeper into the matter. Yet ‘Inmotion' turned into a very heavy and accessible album. This is a band with a great future if they do a lot of gigging and ink a deal with the right label!

Am Tuat is een Arnhemse band die al actief is sinds 1997. Na het uitbrengen van een album en een demo heeft de band in september van het vorige jaar de plaat “Inmotion” opgenomen. Volgens de band zelf is de muzikale koers die de band is gaan varen moeilijk in een hokje te stoppen. Ze willen dan ook niet gezien worden als de “zoveelste metalband”. Vol verwachting prop ik de plaat in mijn cd-speler.

De eerste indruk is dat dit toch redelijk nieuwerwets klinkt, iets waar ik zelf niet zo'n fan van ben, maar goed... Deze indruk word gelukkig snel de kop ingedrukt als na 55 seconden een pot degelijke metalriffs wordt geopend. Als de grunt begint is de toon gezet voor de rest van het album, althans dat lijkt zo... Er moet zeker gezegd worden dat het erg prettig in de oren klinkt wat deze mannen naar voren schuiven. Duidelijke invloeden zijn meteen Doom, Death en Black Metal. Tremelo picking riffs worden afgewisseld met goede palm-mute stukken. Tot nog toe eigenlijk niks vreemds aan.


Dan verandert de sfeer bij het tweede nummer “Desidero Fides” opeens van koers. Een erg mooi Pink Floyd achtige intermezzo galmt door de speakers, met zowaar een cleane zang. Een erg mooie afwisseling waar er nog een aantal van komen staan op de rest van de plaat. Het doet eigenlijk een beetje denken aan bands als Opeth. De akoestische gitaar verdient overigens wel een compliment, want er zitten erg goede stukken tussen. In het nummer “Lost” zit een tussenstukje waar een ska-achtige invloed wordt gebruikt. Dit is echt even wennen maar is na een aantal luister beurten eigenlijk wel heel erg tof. Het nummer “Ahead of sadness” is helemaal rustig en daar moet je als luisteraar wel echt van houden als je denkt een “extreem” metal album te gaan beluisteren.


De band zelf staat als een huis en de plaat is strak ingespeeld. De drums klinken erg goed in de mix en de gitaren hebben een erg vet geluid. De grunts en screams zijn opzich niet heel bijzonder maar klinken gewoon precies zoals ze moeten horen bij deze “stijl”. Enige punt is dat de cleane zang af en toe minder zuiver lijkt te zingen en dat doet af aan de overtuiging van de afwisselende stukken. Minder prettig is ook dat de tracklist op de achterkant in een circel staat waardoor ik af en toe langer moet kijken welk nummer ik luister dan eigenlijk de bedoeling is. De vormgeving van de hoes is over het algemeen ook iets TE grijs. Uiteindelijk is dit natuurlijk gezeik want het gaat om de muziek en daarbij slaan deze mannen zeker de plank niet mis!


“Immotion” is een album dat niet snel zal vervelen. Er gebeurt van alles en er is veel aandacht besteedt aan de afwisseling van de muziek. De beste nummer zijn naar mijn idee “Oath of the sacrificed” en het bijna 18 minuten durende epos “A cry; the sound of a tragedy”. Ik heb de plaat met plezier een aantal keer geluisterd en kan het fans van bands als Agalloch en Opeth dan ook zeker aanraden!
